Reflections from the Second Chair: 5 Key Insights When You’re Not in Charge

When you’re not in charge at work, it can be challenging. After a decade in an associate pastor role and and other “not in charge jobs”, I’ve learned that the second chair, though sometimes challenging, is filled with blessings. Here are five insights I’d share with anyone serving in the second chair role:

  1. It’s Not About Your Vision
In the second chair, your purpose is to fulfill the first chiars vision. When you embrace that, you grow in humility and collaboration.
  2. God’s Preparing You in the Process
As you help realize someone else’s vision, you’ll be growing toward the vision God has placed in your own heart. Trust that preparation.
  3. Be the Prayerful Support
You’ll be privy to struggles and burdens others might not see. Use that vantage point to lift up your first chair leader in unique prayer. You’re a key intercessor.
  4. Enjoy the Balance
The full weight isn’t on your shoulders. Take joy in that season, have fun, and don’t miss the lighter moments.
  5. Maximize the Learning Season
With less direct pressure, you have the gift of time: study, research, and invest in family. These moments will pay off if you ever move to the first chair.

In any seat other than the top one (whether in church, an organization, or a department) remember it’s still a blessing. Every role shapes us, and whether you stay in the second chair or move to the first, it’s all part of a bigger, purposeful story.
