Building a Fire Part I: A Church on Fire is Committed

I’m about to finish a sermon series at my church called Church on Fire. As I was preaching in Acts’ 2: 42-47, I felt the Lord speak to me:

“Mike, these are the ways a church is set on fire.”

In Acts 2 we see a picture of the early church. It was freshly ignited by the Holy Spirit. It was thriving in unity, and growing in faith. They weren’t just a group of people who had a momentary spiritual spark; they built a fire that endured, spread, and changed the world.

Too often, we experience flashes of faith. These are powerful moments of worship. They can also be breakthroughs in prayer or seasons of excitement. However, the flame tends to fade over time. But God doesn’t just want moments of fire; He wants a church on fire. A church that burns brightly in commitment, unity, and prayer. A church that doesn’t just survive but thrives.

This five-part blog series will explore how the early church sustained their fire. It will also show how we can do the same today in our personal lives and church communities. If we want to see revival, we must commit to these five essentials:

🔥 Commit to the Church
🔥 Be Open to Biblical Teaching
🔥 Share and Care for One Another
🔥 Keep Coming Back to the Table (Reconciliation)
🔥 Pray

Over the next five weeks, we’ll walk through each of these principles, learning what it means to be part of a church that is truly on fire for God.

Are you ready? Let’s build the fire together.

Commit to the Church

  1. A Church on Fire is Committed to the Church

Fire doesn’t last without fuel. In the same way, a believer’s faith won’t burn brightly unless it’s nurtured within the church. The early church was devoted, they didn’t just attend services; they leaned in and made the church their spiritual home.

Acts 2:42 tells us, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Their devotion was a choice, not a passing feeling. They prioritized gathering together, supporting one another, and engaging in God’s work.

Today, many people treat church as optional, attending sporadically or only when it’s convenient. But a church on fire is built by people who commit to showing up, serving, and investing in their church family.

How Can We Apply This?

  1. As Individuals: Make church a priority, not an afterthought. Commit to attending regularly, joining a small group, or serving in a ministry. 🔥
  2. As a Church: Foster a welcoming, engaging environment where people feel valued and connected. Help them see that the church isn’t just a place to attend, it’s a family to belong to. 🔥
  3. Together: Encourage one another to stay committed, even when life gets busy. A fire grows stronger when people fuel it together. 🔥

The early believers didn’t just attend church when it was convenient; they devoted themselves to it. They knew that faith grows stronger in community, and they made a commitment to gather, serve, and worship together. If we want to see the fire of God burn in our lives and in our churches, we must do the same

A church on fire isn’t built on convenience—it’s built on commitment. It’s built on showing up, staying engaged, and investing in what God is doing. When we commit to the church, we position ourselves to experience the power of the Holy Spirit in deeper ways.

So, let’s lean in. Let’s be present. Let’s commit to fueling the fire God is building. Because when we do, we won’t just see sparks—we’ll see a blaze that transforms lives and spreads far beyond our walls.

Are you ready to commit? Let’s build the fire together.
